Introduction: Where Nature Meets Philosophy

The Yanggu Humanities Village Camping Site is more than just a place to pitch a tent—it’s a unique destination where nature, reflection, and culture come together. Located in Dongsu-ri Village, Yongmeori Park, Yanggu County, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, this peaceful campground sits right beside Paro Lake, offering stunning views and a tranquil atmosphere.

I first camped here two years ago, drawn by its unbeatable lakeside location. Recently, I returned for my second visit and was pleasantly surprised to see how the site—and especially the Yanggu Humanities Museum—has evolved.

Camping Fees & Benefits

A unique perk of this campground is the Yanggu local culture gift certificate refund.
For example, if you pay 35,000 KRW, you may receive a 10,000 KRW local voucher, which can be used in the area—an excellent way to support local businesses.

Facilities and Convenience

At the center of Zones 1 and 2, you’ll find a Café & Convenience Store:

  • Open: 10:00–18:00 (until 20:00 on Saturdays)
  • Closed on Mondays
  • 24-hour microwave available on the terrace

Clean restrooms, showers, and washing areas are well-maintained, though some facilities show signs of age.

Yanggu Humanities Museum: A Thoughtful Cultural Stop

Located inside the camping site, the Yanggu Humanities Museum recently reopened Building 2 after renovation (as of September 25). Admission was free during my visit.

Building Highlights

1F – Ahn Byung-wook Hall

Dedicated to philosopher Ahn Byung-wook (1920–2013), one of Korea’s three great modern philosophers. His reflections on life, ethics, and meaningful living resonate deeply even today.

“What matters is not living long, but living meaningfully.”

2F – Kim Hyung-suk Hall (Fully Renovated)

Philosopher Kim Hyung-suk (born 1920), author of “Living a Hundred Years”, now has a completely redesigned exhibition space. The new layout feels more open and features his personal ceramic collection, giving the hall a refined, contemplative atmosphere.

From the terrace, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the museum grounds and surrounding landscape.

Future Developments in Dongsu-ri Village

Yanggu County plans to complete a traditional Hanok village with:

  • 24 Hanok-style accommodations
  • Community and shared spaces (by 2026)

Additional projects include:

  • A 510m suspension bridge connecting Flower Island and Dongsu-ri
  • Observation towers, photo zones, and night landscape lighting (by 2027)

These developments will significantly enhance the area’s appeal as a cultural tourism destination.

Final Thoughts: Is It Worth Visiting?

If you’re planning a trip to Yanggu, the Yanggu Humanities Village Camping Site is an excellent choice for a 1–2 night stay. With its peaceful lakeside setting, thoughtful museum exhibits, and growing cultural infrastructure, it offers a rare blend of camping, learning, and healing.

Whether you’re a camper, a philosophy lover, or simply someone seeking a quiet retreat, this destination is well worth adding to your itinerary.
